Employability support

As a growing sector there can be a lack of job opportunities in the area that you’re interested in. Don’t let that put you off – instead consider being flexible and adaptable in your job search.

There might be several steps to get you to your dream sustainable food job. You don't need to hold out for your ultimate role - consider how you could develop or learn in any job.

Our top tips for success in landing that dream job are:

  • Build your network through LinkedIn, events and training
    • If you don't have a LinkedIn profile, create one now and connect with people in organisations and roles that you're interested in. You can also find free resources and events on LinkedIn.
  • Sign up to newsletters from organisations you’d like to work with and follow them on social media. Why not start with Sustain's
  • Make sure you’re signed up to the Roots to Work weekly job alerts email
  • Explore how other people got to where they are. Our Roots to Work blogs are a great place to start!
  • Be open to exploring related areas of work. You might want to work in food policy but why not get experience and connections in food growing? You never know where it might lead!
  • Demonstrate your passion and enthusiasm in your CV and covering letter – especially if you have less work experience. Explain why you want to work in this sector, what you can bring to it and what change you'd like to be a part of.
  • Provide examples in applications and interviews that demonstrate how you meet the criteria. Consider transferable skills and experience when doing this.
