Freelance Cookery Class Facilitators (x3) multiple locations in London.

Are you looking for an ad hoc afternoon / evening role that makes a difference? Do you have hospitality experience and/or a passion for food? Support a great cause, meet amazing people and eat incredible food from around the world at Migrateful!   

We are looking for hands-on facilitators who can support our cookery sessions on an ad hoc basis with availability to cover anything from 2 sessions per month to 3 sessions per week, depending on demand.  Full training on how to facilitate a Migrateful Cookery Class and Cookery Demonstration will be provided.

About the role: 

As a Cookery Class Facilitator, you will play a crucial role in ensuring our cookery sessions run smoothly and are enjoyable for everyone involved. You’ll be responsible for the preparation and setup of classes, supporting the chef, managing volunteers, and ensuring an engaging and educational experience for all participants.

Before the class, the Facilitator will familiarise themselves with class plans, recipes and the venue. They’ll ensure all ingredients required for the class have been purchased, and together with the volunteers, they will set up the room and prepare all the items and ingredients needed. During the Cookery Class, the facilitator manages the volunteers, and plays the important role of connecting guests and the chef by supporting the chef to share stories of their culture and journey.

Responsibilities:

  • Familiarise yourself with class plans, recipes, and venue details before each session.
  • Supporting the chef throughout the class and managing the volunteers
  • Liaising with chefs and volunteers ahead of class (e.g. on timings, ingredients, talking points).
  • Purchase necessary ingredients and manage the setup of the venue with the help of volunteers.
  • Manage volunteers and ensure they are effectively assisting with the class.
  • Welcoming participants and creating a warm, friendly atmosphere.
  • Introduce Migrateful and deliver a Health & Safety and Allergen briefing before each class starts to participants.
  • Assist with food and kitchen safety and basic food preparation.
  • Ensure the venue is left clean and tidy after the class.
  • Provide regular feedback after each class including updates to recipes and feedback on chefs, volunteers and the class to help improve future classes and support chef development.

What we are looking for in a candidate: 

Essential:  

  • Able to work shifts: 
    • Peckham:  4:45pm - 10:30pm (weekday)
    • Angel: 4:45pm - 10:30pm (weekday)
    • Farringdon:  10:45am to 4pm and/or 4:45 pm - 10:30 pm on weekdays and weekends
    • Lambeth: 10:45am - 4 pm and/or 4:45 pm - 10:30 pm on weekdays and weekends
  • Excellent public speaking and hosting skills
  • Experience in hospitality and/or culinary fields
  • Ability to take initiative, be flexible and think creatively
  • Strong problem-solving skills, particularly in health & safety in a hospitality/food environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with empathy for diverse and vulnerable groups
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, and positive attitude
  • Comfortable manual handling and lifting heavy loads (equipment boxes, heavy shopping, tables & chairs)
  • Has the right to work and is self-employed
  • Lives in London
  • Supports Migrateful’s mission

Desirable

  • Experience of working with vulnerable adults, particularly from refugee backgrounds
  • Experience of cookery classes
  • Hospitality experience
  • Food Safety and Hygiene Level 2 Qualification or willingness to obtain
  • First Aid Training or willingness to obtain
