Job description

We are looking to recruit a highly talented Chef to assist us with the growth of Café Beam at Ouseburn Farm, and to support our Head Chef and team of volunteers to provide the best experience for our young people and customers alike.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to produce food of an excellent standard and blend their creativity with a calm and approachable manner to assist the development of the youngsters working alongside them, both front of house and in the kitchen. The successful candidate will have the skills, confidence and knowledge to run a busy kitchen in the absence of our Head Chef and will be confident in all food hygiene and preparation regulations.

This role will be day time hours only (evening hours would only be for an occasional event) and the cafe is closed for the Christmas/New Year period each year.

Skills/Experience Required:

  • Excellent knowledge of and passion for food and quality ingredients.
  • Ability to form a valuable, professional relationship with the young people on placement to optimise their development in the workplace.
  • Friendly, can-do attitude
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Practical experience of working in a busy café / restaurant / pub environment.
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office packages including Word, Excel.
  • An understanding of current Health & Safety legislation including food safety.
  • Good communications skills – written, verbal, telephone.
  • Good administrative skills including record keeping.
  • Experience of managing a budget would be beneficial, although training will be given.
  • Experience of stocktaking procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the Head Chef in the day-to-day operation of the kitchen.
  • Provide support and training to any young people on work placement in the kitchen – working towards targets and monitoring outcomes.
  • Maintain excellent food hygiene and safety standards.
  • Complete kitchen paperwork in accordance with SSBB in the absence of the Head Chef.
  • Work closely with the Head Chef to plan menus and dish development.
  • Responsible for kitchen operations and staff welfare in the absence of the Head Chef.
  • Checking food deliveries for quality and content.
  • To maintain competitor awareness.
  • Any other duties deemed necessary by Head Chef, Exec Head Chef or CEO.
