Job description

Knepp Market Garden is entering its fourth season in 2025, and we’re looking for an enthusiastic assistant grower to join our team. The role will be from mid April through to mid October 2025, working 4.5 days per week. We are seeking a motivated, hard-working individual who is passionate about agroecological vegetable production and committed to fostering good team energy and workflow.

About Knepp Market Garden

Our 3-acre Soil Association-certified market garden is located on the Knepp Estate, adjacent to the renowned rewilding project. Before 2022, the site was a pony and sheep paddock; we have since transformed it into a productive market garden. Our practices include both no-dig methods and shallow cultivation across different areas of the site. We are also working to integrate diverse cover crops into our system. We grow produce for the on-site Wilding Kitchen and Shop, as well as for wholesale customers.

Our Values

We believe that passion, flow, sincerity, and good communication are key to creating a positive workplace and running a successful market garden. We approach our work with focus and intention, maximizing both efficiency and enjoyment.

Job Description

The Assistant Grower will work as part of our team under the direction of our lead growers. Responsibilities include all aspects of vegetable production: planting, cultivation, vegetable husbandry, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. You will be working both out in the field as well as in our polytunnels.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • At least one season of experience in commercial vegetable production.
  • Enthusiasm for working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Bring a positive attitude to problem-solving.
  • Be strong and physically fit.
  • Be confident talking to members of the public about the market garden.

Additional Information

We offer on-the-job training for the right candidate, with potential for increased responsibilities and longer-term employment. Pay is £12.50 per hour for a 4-day work week plus one weekend per month.  Our day typically runs 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, though hours may vary in hot or adverse weather.  You’ll also receive weekly vegetables as part of the compensation package.

Application information

To apply, please email your CV and a cover letter explaining why you are the ideal candidate for this role to: growers@knepp.co.uk

You’ll hear back from us the week commencing 20/01/2025 with interviews being held the following week.
