Job Description: Head Grower

About us: Good Earth Growers are proud to grow a high quality range of organic produce and supply some of the finest restaurants in the UK. Our range includes edible flowers, micro greens, veg, herbs, and specialist Asian produce. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of an ambitious business with an enthusiastic team who are keen to grow and develop.

Role Function:

  • Day-to-day running of growing, ensuring that produce is available for sale, as per the forecasted sales.
  • Leading the horticultural planning, propagation, cultivation and reporting to meet the expectations of our growing business.
  • Leading an effective team to carry out efficient processes and deliver quality produce for our customers.

This is a permanent full-time role with seasonal variation starting in February 2024. We operate across multiple sites working primarily at Crocadon Farm, St. Mellion, Cornwall. 

Core Activities:

  • Planning the year to enable crop planning, sowing, watering, planting out, weeding and harvesting, in line with forecast demand, is completed effectively and efficiently.  
  • Ensuring all horticultural processes consistently deliver quality produce and meet the targets of our growing business.  
  • Managing organic status and certification with Biodynamic UK and ensuring progressive plant and ecosystem health.
  • Managing labour, seed, compost, equipment and other growing essentials
  • Ensuring the work environment is organised, inspiring, meets health and safety standards and people are cared for.
  • Supporting staff to effectively follow efficient and intuitive workflows and systems.
  • Contributing to a developing and progressive culture where all staff are mentored, motivated and accountable to each other and reported data.
  • Ongoing evaluation and communication of information and processes relating to growing responsibilities.
  • Collaborating with the Operations Co-ordinator to ensure create a mutually beneficial relationship that provides resilience and stability for the business.

Desired Qualities:

  • 5 years of experience growing food for the wholesale or retail market.
  • Experience growing either microgreens, edible flowers, salads, Asian herbs, or specialty/baby vegetables.
  • A keen eye for processes and measurable development.
  • Motivation to grow in any/all of the above areas and realise personal and collective well-being and ability.
  • Connection to the cultural heritage of the produce from Asia that we are growing.
