Job description

This is a freelance role that has been created to provide additional support to our Garden Manager and to enable BPCG to extend its offer to our volunteers at the weekends. The Assistant Community Gardener will manage the site and support and guide our volunteers on Saturdays.  

You will report to and be required to liaise closely with our Garden Manager to help to plan and agree a range of gardening activities for our volunteers. You will then be responsible for supporting our volunteers to carry out these tasks on site, providing advice and guidance as required. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

General 

  • To have overall responsibility for supervising our garden volunteers 
  • To have overall responsibility for safety and security while managing the site 
  • To be responsible for locking the site after a shift including operation of the Intruder Alarm System, as required 
  • To liaise directly with the Garden Manager and Operations Manager as necessary
  • To be the main point of contact and face of BPCG while managing the site 
  • To be responsible for the health, safety and well-being of all visitors while managing the site 

Other 

  • Any other duties that may be reasonably requested by the Garden Manager 
  • To support and uphold Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses Health and Safety policy. 
  • To direct the Evacuation Procedure in the event of an emergency
  • To uphold all security protocols including the incident report procedure
  • Please note that you must be comfortable being the sole member of staff on site. 

Person Specification 

Essential 

  • High level of horticultural skills and knowledge, especially food growing
  • Ability to guide and supervise volunteers in a wide range of gardening activities including planting and growing, harvesting, pruning and plant care 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Experience of managing volunteers 
  • Experience of community gardening 

Desirable 

  • RHS Level 2 or equivalent 
  • Experience of being responsible for a public space 
  • Practical awareness of health and safety issues 
  • Knowledge of First Aid / First Aid training 
  • Commitment to sustainable horticulture

Conditions of Work

Hours: Working hours will be 9am to 5pm on Saturdays.

Pay: £20 per hour.

You will be expected to invoice for your hours and to be registered as self-employed (be able to provide a Unique Tax Reference). 

You will be expected to have a basic DBS check for this role.
