Job description

  • Location: The Apricot Centre, South Devon
  • Contract Type: Full-time (Maternity Cover from 1st May to 31st October 2025)
  • Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7:30am - 3pm
  • Salary: £12.60 per hour
  • Holiday: 28 days (pro rata)

We specialise in biodynamic/organic farming, regenerative and agroecological agriculture, and promoting local food systems. Our work spans across food production, farming education, mental health initiatives, and sustainability. The Role:

This is a full time 6 month maternity cover role. You will be in charge of the cut flower production at the Apricot Centre. Primary duties will include all aspects of cut flower production including growing, maintaining, harvesting and floristry for retail, wholesale and events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Propagation including sowing and seedling care, division of seedlings, following and updating the crop plan
  • Field tasks include cultivation of flower beds, hand weeding, hoeing, watering, and transplanting
  • Harvesting of multiple flower crops in a timely manner while maintaining harvesting protocols and post harvesting treatments
  • Good record keeping 
  • Understanding and anticipating the crop and harvest schedule for flowers as well as liaising with our sales team regarding harvests
  • Management of emails regarding wholesale, bespoke orders and event flowers. Weekly availability lists are to be provided to our wholesale list of florists
  • Bunching and floral design for market, farm customers, bespoke orders and events
  • Supervising and working one on one with a trainee for part of the week
  • Drying and storing of dried flowers

Key Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Must have 1 year minimum experience working with cut flowers in a commercial setting 
  • Event floristry skills are required for this role 
  • Full UK driving license 
  • Must be able to work independently and manage own time efficiently
  • Ability to work in all weathers
  • This is a physically demanding position and a reasonable level of physical fitness is necessary to carry out daily tasks
  • Knowledge of cut flower varieties and post harvesting handling
  • Good communication skills and passion for promoting biodynamic/organic and seasonal flowers

Desirable

  • Confidence to supervise a trainee
  • Ability to operate horticultural machinery, including BCS pedestrian tractor
  • Relevant qualification/training

About The Apricot Centre @Huxham's Cross Farm

The Apricot Centre CIC @Huxhams Cross Farm is nestled in the heart of Dartington. We are a 35 acre organic and Biodynamic farm and CSA that grows a variety of fruit, vegetables and cut flowers, with a small herd of cattle and pigs, as well as offering a wellbeing service and nature connection activities. We are also an education centre, offering officially accredited Level 2, 3 and 4 courses and traineeships in organic regenerative agriculture, as well as permaculture and biodynamics trainings.
