Job description

About The Rooftop Farm

Nestled atop Wimbledon Quarter, The Rooftop Farm is more than just a space to grow food—it’s a thriving, sustainable hub where we’re transforming unused urban spaces into flourishing space that serves our local community. Our goal is to produce fresh, seasonal produce while creating a circular economy that minimises waste, supports local restaurants, and enriches our environment. If you're passionate about sustainable farming and want to be part of a forward-thinking, green revolution, we’d love to hear from you!

About the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated gardener to join our team at The Rooftop Farm Wimbledon. In this hands-on role, you’ll help cultivate a diverse range of crops, including gourmet mushrooms grown on recycled coffee grounds, seasonal vegetables and herbs!

You’ll work closely with another Urban Farmer, but the role also requires independent work, allowing you to take ownership. As the farm continues to grow, there will be plenty of opportunities to expand your role—whether that’s managing additional crops or expanding our existing range.

Excitingly, we’re launching a monthly subscription box for our locally grown produce and will soon be offering it at the Fire Station Cafe, making it easier than ever for our community to enjoy fresh, seasonal products directly from the farm. This is a great opportunity to be involved in growing and supplying produce that will be enjoyed by the local community.

Hours - 10-20 hours per week, with the potential to grow as the farm expands.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mushroom Grower: Manage our innovative mushroom farm, including preparation and fruiting tents (no prior experience required—we’ll provide training!).
  • Urban Garden Maintenance: Cultivate a variety of plants, from microgreens to seasonal produce, on the roof of Wimbledon Quarter.
  • Sustainable Practices: Support the development and implementation of sustainable farming techniques, from composting and integrated pest management to crop rotation and soil health management.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with local cafes, restaurants, and delicatessens to supply fresh produce. We partner with the Fire Station Cafe at Wimbledon Quarter, and our produce will available there very soon.
  • Farm Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records of farm production, crop health, and sustainability efforts.
  • Local Sales: Attend farmers markets to sell farm produce and engage with customers about our work.
  • Subscription Box: Contribute to the preparation and launch of our upcoming monthly subscription box service, bringing our farm’s produce straight to the community.
  • Fire Station Cafe: Support the availability of farm-fresh produce at the Fire Station Cafe, ensuring the local community can easily access and enjoy the fruits of our farm.

Ideal Candidate

You should be passionate about gardening and sustainable farming, and ready to help lead the charge in making urban agriculture thrive. Here’s what we’re looking for:

Essential:

  • A keen gardener with a genuine passion for growing and farming.
  • Flexibility around working hours.
  • Comfortable working independently as well as part of a team.
  • Live locally to Wimbledon for easy access to the farm.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Experience in low-yield farming in a commercial environment.
  • Interest in mushroom farming (training provided).
  • Ability to post on social media and engage community.

What We Offer

  • Be part of a forward-thinking, sustainable farming project with exciting growth potential.
  • Work in a beautiful and unique environment
  • Opportunities to help launch and grow our monthly subscription box, a new way for the community to enjoy fresh, local produce.
  • A supportive and passionate team that’s committed to making a positive impact on the local community and environment.
