Grower at our Natural Farm in Somerset 

Overview

  • Work schedule: part-time or full-time options available 
  • Salary: £27k/annum pro rata
  • Start: April/May with immediate availability 
  • Location: Higher Farm, Sutton, BA4 6QF (Castle Cary, 5min drive, 15min walk)
  • No accommodation 

Project overview

We are a 50 acre natural farm near Castle Cary, Somerset. Our farm grows food for our on-site restaurant, veg box scheme and natural products, together working towards our mission to support the regeneration of our food system.  In its second year, our farm is focused around biodiversity, successional agroforestry and natural fertility through applying a toolkit of natural farming methods including Permaculture, Syntropics and Biodynamics.  This year we will be continuing to develop our growing systems, looking to introduce poultry with a focus on geese, as well as continuing to grow our agroforestry market garden. 

Job Description & responsibilities

We are looking for a grower to work across our farm, with a focus in our market garden. You will be growing and harvesting produce for our onsite cafe, weekly veg boxes, and our natural products. 

  • Cultivate the land, establishing our growing systems, bed building, transplanting, plant maintenance and managing the margins
  • Propagation, transplanting, weeding, watering and plant maintenance
  • Harvesting and packing
  • Working as a member of a team

Skills and experience 

  • Commercial market gardening and field scale operations
  • Managing busy harvests and packing
  • Experience with machinery, equipment and tools
  • Knowledge of agroecology, organic, biodynamic, permaculture and regenerative farming practices
  • Working within a team
  • Watering, crop maintenance, pest and disease management
  • Growing crops undercover
  • Physical work

Desirable extra experience

  • Experience in farming poultry
  • Perennials maintenance
  • Mushrooms 
  • Cutting grass, managing green manures, wild flowers, marginal spaces
  • Growing flowers
  • Composting, soil life and closed loop fertility
  • Experience with animals
  • DIY Building skills
  • BCS, Tractor experience - maintaining machinery

We are seeking to establish the right balance of horizontal and vertical decision making and will value the input of all our team members. 

There will be some weekend requirements at times.
