Job description

Working pattern: 22.5 hours per week, Monday-Wednesday (with opportunity for extra hours covering other Chefs annual leave)

Job Background:

Nourish Hub is looking for a passionate and dynamic Chef to join our team on a part-time basis. This role has two key areas of focus.

Firstly, you will be responsible for preparing high-quality meals for a variety of internal and external events. These include Nourish Hub’s Community Suppers, seasonal celebrations, and external catering for valued community partners such as Imperial College and Hammersmith & Fulham Council.

The second core aspect of the role involves co-delivering weekly cookery sessions in collaboration with our Education and Outreach Coordinator. As a vital part of our team, you will help bring our education programme, NourishEd, to life—empowering community members with essential cooking skills and food knowledge.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and prepare vegetarian and vegan meals, desserts, and snacks in bulk, buffets, sandwiches, and canapés under the guidance of the Head Chef. Follow recipes and ensure meals are nutritionally balanced and of the highest quality.
  • Use rescued ingredients from across the supply chain to create dishes that support the Hub’s sustainability ethos, including reducing waste, managing the carbon footprint, and embracing seasonal eating practices.
  • Deliver engaging cookery sessions in our Cookery School that inspire and empower individuals of all ages—children, young people, and adults- to build practical cooking skills and embrace sustainable eating practices.
  • Adhere to food safety and hygiene regulations, with ongoing training provided to ensure compliance. Maintain cleanliness and organisation within the kitchen at all times.
  • Safely use kitchen equipment, including industrial ovens, blast chillers, and blenders. On-the-job training will be provided to ensure you are comfortable with all equipment.
  • Manage and mentor volunteers who contribute to the kitchen’s daily operations. Offer guidance and support to help them develop their skills and improve their personal circumstances, ultimately benefiting the wider community.
  • Communicate effectively with fellow kitchen staff and volunteers to ensure smooth service. Work closely with the Head Chef, Meals on Wheels Chef, Kitchen Porter/Cleaner, and Front of House Supervisor to maintain a harmonious, efficient kitchen environment.
  • Assist with safely packing down and cleaning the kitchen after service, ensuring that all areas are ready for the next shift.
  • Help develop new recipes, dishes, and store cupboard items that align with Nourish Hub’s mission to provide healthy, sustainable, and delicious meals.
  • Deliver events, both catering and education, out in the community.

This is a flexible part-time position. Core working hours are 9:00-17:00, but flexibility is required as evening and weekend shifts are essential. There is also the opportunity for more hours when the Head Chef and Meals and a Chat Chef are on annual leave.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience in vegetarian or vegan cooking, with a focus on creating nutritionally balanced meals.
  • Ability to work with rescued ingredients and create delicious meals under changing circumstances.
  • Experience managing or mentoring adults and children, with a desire to help others grow and develop.
  • Collaborative mindset, with excellent communication skills and a willingness to support fellow team members.

Nourish Hub Background:

Nourish Hub, located on the Edward Woods Estate in Hammersmith, is a vibrant community space created under the Mayor of London’s Good Growth initiative. Funded also by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, Nourish Hub is delivered by UKHarvest, a leading national food rescue and education charity. Together, we deliver a diverse range of services to support the local community, using food as a catalyst for positive change. At Nourish Hub, we offer a place where everyone can nourish their mind, body, and soul. Our services include an affordable daily Community Lunch, an Education and Learning Programme designed to meet local needs, and an extensive volunteer programme to help upskill individuals and build community capacity. By rescuing food and transforming it into opportunities for growth, we empower people and create a thriving, inclusive community. We work in collaboration with local communities, public bodies, businesses, and other voluntary sector organisations to provide high-quality services that foster social cohesion, enhance nutrition awareness, and promote environmental sustainability. Everything we do is focused on improving lives, increasing community engagement, and building capacity for positive social action.
